Henri Simonart Fund
15 Years of Commitment to Human Rights
For Children & Women
Created in 2010 to honor the retirement of Professor Henri Simonart, a prominent public law expert at UCLouvain,
the Henri Simonart Fund is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year (2010–2025). From its inception, the Fund has
been dedicated to a clear mission: bringing hope and progress by supporting local projects in South Kivu in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These grassroots initiatives transform the lives of women and children.

A Mission Rooted in Trust and Solidarity
The choice of South Kivu is no coincidence. UCLouvain has a historical presence in the region and maintains strong relationships based on mutual trust with local stakeholders. These close links allow the Henri Simonart Fund to act directly in the field, in partnership with a particularly dynamic civil society. This proximity ensures the efficiency of the supported projects and their tangible impact on local communities.

Projects that Bring Hope

Since its creation, the Henri Simonart Fund has financed and supported initiatives addressing the essential needs of local populations while strengthening human rights and sustainable development.

The Henri Simonart Center that opened in July 2011, is a flagship example. Now active for over 14 years, it offers a wide range of services and opportunities:
-
A library and documentation center, essential for education and access to information.
-
Literacy courses, opening new prospects for adults and young people.
-
Legal education programs and legal and judicial assistance, reinforcing justice and the rule of law.
-
Support for the emergence of female leadership and psychosocial assistance for vulnerable people.
-
A collective permaculture garden, providing sustainable solutions to food and economic challenges.
-
The creation of a space for meetings and exchanges, hosting debates, screenings, and workshops to strengthen local social cohesion.
-
A public secretariat, accessible to all, simplifying administrative processes.
-
Promotion of local crafts, generating jobs while highlighting women’s skills and know-how.
-
Initiatives focused on women’s employment, fostering their economic and social independence.
Support for the Katana Orphanage
In parallel, the Fund provides direct support to the Katana Orphanage, which houses 42 children living in extreme poverty. This private support focuses on essential needs: food, schooling, healthcare, energy (including solar panel installations), and clothing.

Inspired by Remarkable Figures
The Henri Simonart Fund also draws inspiration from iconic figures honored by UCLouvain through its honorary doctorates:
-
Vénantie Bisimwa, an indefatigable advocate for women’s rights and peace.
-
Solange Lusiku (†), an engaged journalist and activist for justice.
-
Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, renowned for his fight against sexual violence in the DRC.
15 Years of Impact: A Renewed Commitment
Over the past 15 years, the Henri Simonart Fund has played a vital role in promoting human rights in eastern DRC. By working hand in hand with local partners and a resilient civil society, it has made essential projects a reality, contributing to build a fairer and more inclusive future.
On this anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to continue this mission. These initiatives uphold human dignity, autonomy, and solidarity, perpetuating the legacy of Professor Henri Simonart in service of the people of South Kivu.
Looking Ahead: A Focus on Youth
The future of the Fund rests on a crucial challenge: supporting the new generation who has grown up in a context of 30 years of conflicts. While the resilience and dynamism of South Kivu’s youth are exceptional, they need financial support to continue building their lives.
The Henri Simonart Center in Walungu is now a model of autonomy, but efforts must be intensified to guide the youth toward a brighter future. Together, with your support, we can continue to transform lives and build a world where human rights are respected.
